About Shelter

A young family outside their home

Shelter is a national charity that works to improve the lives of homeless and badly housed people.

We do this by giving free advice, information and advocacy to people in housing need, and by campaigning for lasting political change to end the housing crisis for good.

Help and advice

Shelter does not provide housing, but we give confidential help to people with all kinds of housing problems.

Fighting for change

Shelter tackles the root causes of bad housing by lobbying government and local authorities for new laws and policies, and more investment.

Our influential campaigns bring aspects of bad housing to the attention of the media and the public, who help us fight for solutions.

Informing professionals

As a leading expert on housing in Britain, we develop practical solutions to address the housing crisis. We also work with the housing sector to promote good practice, publish reports, and deliver professional training.

Shelter believes that everybody needs a home in a place they can thrive. Our work won’t stop until there is a home for everyone.
